Remember remember....

....the 5th of November!

As its the 400th anniversary of Guy Fawkes, are there any public displays on in the town this year?

According to this weeks Gazette and Herald the Scout hut is doing their usual display, on Saturday 5th from 6:30 till 8:30 if I remember correctly.

There is also a sign about it somewhere in the town...but I cant remember where I saw it now.

I remember back a few years ago there always used to be one on the common with a HUGE bonfire (Tho I was younger back then, so it might not of been HUGE). Why is this not happening ??

Access to the common is free and the chamber of commerce or the Lions bought the fireworks in good faith and then did a collection from the people who attended............result was they ran out of money so they stopped doing it.

Scout one is very crowded and the people seem a bit too close to the proceedings ...we stopped going after seeing rockets going through the crowd

I know access to the common is free, I would gladly offer to put on a display up there next year, but there is a small matter of money. Certain things would need to be paid for, firstly the firworks themselves, then there is PLI - Public Liability Insurance. *If* something does go wrong I dont wanna get sued :( I would be more than willing to put in time and effort to organise and do the display, its the other factors that are the problem.

I agree, the Scout hut one used to be good, but its popularity has been its downfall. It gets very crowded there and the area they have to work within is small. By allowing enough room for the crowd they are not allowing large enough safety zones. They also have large trees overhanging the launch site, which is like a big no-no in the firework code.

This year (as has been the tradition for a few years now) I am doing a private display at my sisters house (well, I say private, she has invited half the street!).

You hit the nail right on the head .....

this is where the others gave up

1. there is no money

2. very few people would pay

3. insurance would have to be for at least £5,000,000 and that would cost in the region of £1,500 to £2,000

4. so someone would have to come up with at least £4,000 in advance and hope they collected it back on the night.

5. dont expect any help from the council or any other organisation (we have been there and done that)
