Well it's come round again .....all hallows eve....spoilt by the American nonsense of trick or treat, I'm afraid the film E.T. has a lot to answer for as it brought this bad idea to our shores in the first place.

I can report that the Police "trick or treat, no thanks" posters work a treat, most of them didn't even bother to come anywhere near us.......only the ones who can't read knocked on the door (unfortunately there are a few of them around us )

there used to be a practice called souling in the uk and Ireland in the middle ages where the poor would knock on dooors and sing for the dead in return for cakes, this is thought to be the origins of trick or treating the yanks comercialised it and we imported the idea back here in the 80s. you should do what we do we buy a big bag of mixed sweets and get involved, enjoy the pleasure of giving and making someone happy. as john lennon said all you need iis love love, light and peace. rocker
I was born in Marlborough and each time on come on the forum there seems to be a negative remark about Yanks. Narrow streets breed narrow minds, you should look out for that. I have been living in Los Angeles the last 15 years. Halloween in the US is a fantastic holiday for children. Everyone dresses up in costume (not just the scary stuff) and families go out and have such fun. It has turned into one of my favorite holidays. It's a great time knocking doors and the people are really warm and funny.
On a positive note, I don't have to step over people falling out of pubs drunk on a Friday or Saturday night. Come to think of it, I love Thanksgiving and 4th July. It appears these Yanks really know how to enjoy themselves.
