Somerfield closing down for good

Heard the news that Somerfield is closing down in late November and opening up on the 8th of December as..................................................an M&S Simply Food store....so now there will be no cheaper food stores in the town.........come on Council surley now we should invite Aldi or Lidl to open a store here somewhere.........that empty wasteland at the bottom of Salisbury hill would be ideal.

This is aweful. Unless Marlborough retains a balance of shopping facilities it will become even more of a middle class ghetto.  M&S are just what the 4x4 set, KVAT luvvies  and pink rinse retirees want but what about the rest?

If it happens, it will be a sad day.

As for the Salisbury Road building site they might as well open it for retail as no one else seems to want to open a business there - do you know if there are any takers on this site yet?

Just to add to the news of "incoming" stores ... the word is that the Fairy Shop and Bath Travel are to be opened as a combined Waterstones/Starbucks ..... make of that what you will!

Sadly I think this has been on the cards for a while has it not? Somerfield has allowed it's shop to remain - shall we say 'shabby' for a long time. I know I've been put off shopping in there, and I'm open to as many B.O.G.O.F bargains as I can get!

I feel for the elderly of the town, and single-parent families/low-income families. We're not all KVAT luvies after all (they're a dying breed I hear). Perhaps we should petition Tesco - the new owners of One Stop - and ask that they turn that other 'shabby' shop to a proper Tesco Express? I'm sure they will make a good profit from the ex-Somerfield trade?

Aldi and Lidl have been trying to find a site in Marlborough for a while now .....I would prefer Aldi but them turning up depends on someone contacting them about a site.........maybe one at the bottom of Salisbury Hill.....but that is up to the councillors............it could have pedestrian access from St. Margarets mead and I am sure a bus route could be sorted out ...plus it would be much better if people shoped in Marlborough instead of going to the Lidl at Devizes or Asda in Swindon who I am sure would be willing to try the free bus to Asda scheme again once the only cheap food shop in the town has gone

I have often wondered whether with a bit of imagination and support, the site opposite Elm Tree could be redeveloped into an aldi/lidl.  It failed as an upholsterer and a pet supplies shop, but if the owners of the site there (including the amor and ellis bit) were negotiated with, and the relevant authorities were supportive, then we could get a cheap supermarket in a part of town that was fairly easy for a lot of people to get to.

Probably loads of reasons why it would not be possible, but hey the site doesn't do much for me as it is, and it is just a thought..... !

Another possible site may be that closed up unit on the Dean's garage site (the old antiques place). It's big enough for a baby Tesco / Aldi, currently an eyesore, easy to get to and seems to have plenty of parking and room for developement.  Tesco could even take over the garage and offer cheap fuel - now there's a thought.
