Right we have all had a moan and groan about the lights......or lack of them in Marlborough.......a car ran into one of the poles ripping out that string and I would have thought bending the pole.......so new pole and new lighting string needed for that!
But lets be positive ...instead of moaning and pointing and saying they should.....could we try "we should" and lets have some ideas of how to improve the lights and pay for them .....I for instance would love to see all the lights white (has anyone seen Hungerford lights)........should we abandon the idea of putting them across the street and have trees on each building....perhaps have a large tree in the centre parking spaces half way down the high street(3 or 4 parking spaces barriered off would do).....who pays? who stands to make money out of it? the council should put some towards it, but it is the shops who stand to make money from the extra and happier visitors.....shops who didn't pay wouldn't have trees outside their shops ...it has to be an all or nothing display to look good, so people could always make note of who helps and who doesn't and alter their shopping habits accordingly,
It' is no good sitting on the fence with this so speak now don't just lurk on this forum, say something, suggest something, be part of the solution, stop moaning and start doing

Couldn't agree more. Both Pewsey and Hungerford out-shone [sorry] Marlborough this year. But if a small town like Hungerford can put on such an excellent show then Marlbrough should easily be able to do better. I would suggest that the Town Council contact Hungerford and find out what fnancial model they have used and modify it to fit their own town. Not all shops in Hungerford had a tree but by far and away the majority did and the end result was stunning. There certainly seemed to be a united and co-ordinated approach to the lights in H so the challenge to Marlborough is to beat them next year. Can't wait as I do like High Streets lit up at Christmas.
The Christmas Lights this year were all that the committees could afford. The Insurace for us to put them up is roughly £5000 so with all the money that we had we could only afford to have contractors put up the lights and with our limited funds that was all our money gone. The reason that there is such a poor showing of lights is that no one is prepared to help fund the lights. Trust me on that, we tried. A couple of individuals are also according to my knowledge trying to set up save the lights campaign. So I leave you a question. With all the lights knakered now after being used over the many years. Would you like lights in the highstreet this christmas. If so any help towards the campaign will be greatly thank and lets show the over towns in Wiltshire, what Marlborough is all about. Also we have tried the town concil routes aswell and have asked hungerford. Which Marlborough business are not doing and donating towards the lights.
