Funny thing is the fair was granted to held on the the eve of the feast of the assummption of the virgin Mary !!!!! which we think is in August.....we are still trying to find out when or why it was moved or wether the church calendar was different back then

i'm sure the church calender was different, the christian religon, had a knack of superinposing their dates over pagan festivals to suit their own means, chrismas- winter solstice, easter- the pagan festival of oester, all saints day, halloween, and the list goes on man made god in his own image, love light and peace, rocker
I thought the Mop was the weekend either side of Michaelmass (St Michael and All Angels) which is now September 29th but when the Charter was written was October 12th I think..... yes - the church does change dates and also swipes the Pagan Festivals I believe. Not only that - the red and green we associate with Christmas were the colours for Winter Solstice ..... along with a whole lot of other traditions!
Not sure I mind too much - tolerance seems a better way forward in the world right now rather than arguing who thought of what first!
