Hello, I am writing a supplement on Marlborough for Wiltshire Life. Can any of you tell me the best/worst things about your town? I won't be able to publish diatribes mentioning names, but would love to know what makes Marlborough people tick. And does anyone know anything about Jacky John's Fair, which apparently took place in May and involved chucking things into the river?
Apart from the people on this forum I think Apathy would be a good place to start....the Carnival has failed this year due to apathy ....the Lions look to be failing due to apathy....and to be honest I can only see it getting worse............Marlborough will be famous very soon because nothing will happen here and no one will care....maybe a case for the Guiness book of records...under the most boring town.......
Oh hang on there was a scandal about overspending on the council last year .....but ......its been forgotton ......because very few people cared.
Basically its a town for the affluent older people who want it to stay quiet and picturesque.....it's a cash cow for kennet district council they make a fortune by charging visitors to park here, except for Sunday which is free at the moment and so that the visitors can get easy aprking all the shop workers park all day and block spaces or some shop owners park vehicles all day in the high street as advertising banners. Normal shops can't afford to come here because the rents are too high...and it is actually quicker to do food shopping in Swindon
The town is loosing all its younger people, there are no cheaper houses on sale (cheapest last time I looked was one bed flat for £99,000 ) and the School is even trying to go back on a deal to include 50% low cost housing on their own development to raise cash for the "new" school.
So there you have it ...Marlborough....gods waiting room...now there's an idea for the signs on the entrance to the town

I do think that one of the lovely things about the town is wandering the alleyways and back streets off the High Street. The town is full of surprises and still has a sense of individuality.
