Historical Marlborough

I noticed Richard's comments in the guestbook going on about all the plaques around town describing historical aspects of Marlborough.

To start the ball rolling, I lived in the High Street and the house was occupied in Victorian times by the Hancock family.  One brother developed the process of vulcanisation of rubber and another had built an incredible steam carriage which travelled by road between London and Bath.  I saw a replica of this once and it was huge!

Any other stories?  Anything happening for May Day?

That's interesting Jeremy - when did you leave Marlborough?  Go down through the archway nearest to your old house, towards the river - tell me how you remember it and I'll update you!  I popped up to the High Street this morning - it is a beautiful hot sunny day here - more like midsummer.  The Town Hall had a Craft Market going on, but there didn't seem to be to much else happening - people wandering around, men trying not to be dragged into shops and Waitrose is, of course, open now - as it will be tomorrow.  I've spent the day cleaning up my tiny garden- well just a litle patio really - and in that process have got sun burned - ouchie.  Must rush for the Aftersun cream now!  Time for a nice cold glass of wine then, sitting on the riverbank watching the newly hatched ducklings rush about in the water like little clockwork toys.

Hi Angel- this is the third time I've attempted to send a reply.  It's good to see you keeping in touch. If I've got my bearings right, I remember paddling past where you live now, in the 1970s.

I'm paranoid about this computer and will sign off now.  Shame you couldn't have seen my earlier ramblings!  TTFN
