Wouldnt it be nice if all the space in the new industrial site at Salisbury Road was used for a Aldi or Lidl superstore. We do a fair bit of shopping at these stores but have to travel to Swindon. Prices are less and the quality is good. And there would be free parking!!
That's the quickest way to increase traffic congestion and to kill the High Street. No No No to superstores in Marlborough. I don't think it would be at all nice!
We don't shop in Marlborough as it is quicker to go to Swindon also lower prices, free parking and more choice (Marlborough's choice =high price at Waitrose or rubbish at Somerfield)
If Aldi or Lidl came to Marlborough it would stop me going to Swindon (1 less car on the road) create local jobs and best of all give a swift and hard kick in the pants to Waitrose and Somerfield, plus lower the cost of living in this very expensive town, oh and I forgot it may even take a bit of the traffic out of the town centre so you could actually park if you had to.

I live in Marlborough, and find it extremely frustrating to have to travel out of a town this size to do my main shopping. There are enough people living here to justify another store and most of the traffic congestion comes from people travelling through. I do not drive, so have to walk with my shopping or catch the bus (a very expensive option). I cannot se how another store would kill off the high street as the people having to travel elsewhere to shop would no longer need to...if anything it would bring people in. There would be extra parking, and in my opinion it is the lack of parking spaces which is the main bone of contention.
Before anyone thinks about a big out of town store for Marlborough, take a look at some of the decay caused in other towns. Tetbury for example, probably a bit smaller than Marlborough but now has a very sparse market and a feel of a place in decline. All due to a Tesco on the outskirts. Fine for shoppers but devastating for the town and it's community spirit. Devizes, Hungerford and Calne have got it about right with town centre stores.
I say fill the hole back in if nothing is going to be built there. I would like to see a light industry estate or perhaps even a cinema/ theatre there instead of in the cramped area behind Skurrays.
